Methylated Vitamins in Keto Chow

Why does Keto Chow have so many “chemicals?” Why isn’t there a vegan/plant-only version of Keto Chow?

Methylated vitamins? Does that have something to do with menthol cools? =) Nope, but using the correct kind of vitamins is an easy way to tell if a supplement manufacturer actually cares about your health or is just trying to lower costs.

People will sometimes complain about “all the CHEMICALS” in Keto Chow; but most of those are just the human-appropriate versions of vitamins. We list out the full, specific name of each vitamin and mineral that we use because it’s extremely important you get the right kind.

Humans have specific nutrients that we must get from external sources

Generally speaking, these are referred to as “essential nutrients” since you need them and can’t make them yourself. There are a bunch of amino acids that are essential, along with all of the different electrolytes and minerals we need, and several vitamins like B12, A, and Folate.

Vitamins and minerals come in different forms as well. Some are the actual form of the vitamins that we as humans actually use. Others are the precursor or building block versions that, under ideal conditions, our bodies can slowly convert into the final form we need. A good example of this is Vitamin D.

Vitamin D2

We can get Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) from plants and convert it into Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) with exposure to sunlight/UV. When people talk about “getting their vitamin D” by going outside, that’s what they are referring to. You need to either get the D2, and convert it…or you can simply get the final, “correct for humans” D3 version from an animal source and have the right kind immediately.

Folate or Folic Acid

Folate or Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) is similar, but the internal process to make it into the final version is broken for some people, and their only choice is to make sure they are getting the correct version: 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate.

This is usually referred to as “MTHFR” because there’s a problem in the MethyleneTetraHydroFolate Reductase process that adds methyl to folate. Without that added, you can’t use the folate in essential processes.

For people with this problem, it’s actually a huge deal. Finding out they have MTHFR usually comes at the end of years of weird medical problems they couldn’t explain. The fix is to simply take pre-methylated B vitamins. But those are slightly more expensive than super cheap folic acid, so unless you are taking a supplement designed for people with MTHFR, you are unlikely to find 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate.

So what kinds of vitamins does Keto Chow have?

People who have problems with vitamin levels will typically be prescribed by their doctors to take specific supplements that use the correct forms of vitamins. Have a Vitamin D deficiency? You’ll be taking D3. Same for MTHFR or people that have had a gastric bypass and are not able to easily absorb nutrients. Their only option is to get the right vitamins and minerals.

In Keto Chow we use 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate. We also use the pre-methylated form of vitamin B12: Methylcobalamin. Cholecalciferol/D3 instead of D2. Our Vitamin K is technically the K2/MK-7 version, Menaquinonem, which is the animal form of the inferior K1. Our B6 is Pyridoxal 5 phosphate, instead of the junk pyridoxine (among other things, one can dramatically help reduce seizures, the other does not).

We use the best of the best for your nutrition

We put a lot of effort into making certain that we have the best vitamins and minerals for your human body, regardless of the difference in cost. That decision also means that there will never be a vegan version of Keto Chow. The forms of vitamins that come from animal sources are simply superior.

Granted, most of the animal sourcing involves single-cell organisms or oils from wool but they are still sourced from animals and therefore not vegan. (They appear to be fine for vegetarians though.)

You’ll notice that the metals/minerals are typically connected to an amino acid so that your body is able to fully utilize them. You can gnaw on rust/iron oxide all day, but it won’t raise your iron levels. Neither will taking a magnesium supplement that uses magnesium oxide.
